Just five days after round two the Le Mans Auto Italia Championship drivers
were in action again in a race dominated by Roberto Giordanelli making a rare appearance with his 500bhp Alfa GTAM turbo. Qualifying saw Giordanelli comfortably on pole with Graham Scott
second, heading Julian Birley by just half a second. In class B Kevin Griffiths was slightly ahead of Giovanni Di Gennaro and John Brooke. Class C saw Ron Davidson edge out Keith Fawdington whilst
Class D was another Thompson / Buckland one two. Class E went to Derek Jones for the second race running. Ian Mackay returned to the championship however
his engine spat out a cam bucket (followed by plenty of oil) after six laps of qualifying. Also in trouble was Enzo Mucci with the JSM Alfa 147 which lunched an engine.
The race followed 30 laps of the BOSS Formula one championship where drivers waiting in the assembly
area were treated to the sight of an ex Schumacher 1998 Ferrari V12 kissing the tyre wall. A text book rolling start saw Neil Smith get the jump on a confident Derek Jones (playing his Joker) to once again head the
race at the end of the first lap, however Roberto's turbo motor was punching him through the pack and he was leading at the end of the second. Graham Scott (running a temporary stock motor in the Corse
S) threaded his way through the traffic to take Kevin Griffiths (who was also playing his joker) second place, followed a little later by Julian Birley. With Giordanelli
whistling his way to victory a four car train of Scott, Birley, Griffiths and Di Gennaro lapped through the traffic, with Birley closing Scott's Corse down at the
end of most straights but unable to match it under braking or cornering. This was the finishing order followed by the Evolution Engineering Integrale driven by James
Whelan. Andy Thompson was next, winning class D from Gary Buckland. Ron Davidson finished well ahead of Keith Fawdington's Pantera in class C whilst Neil
Smith kept ahead of Derek to take class E. The only man not to finish was Lee Penn whose Alfasud smoked in to the pit lane. (By Tony Soper)
